Just curious, why are you considering the Matt Freeman p bass? Will it be better than say a VM p bass? or even their $179 p bass?

I'm not big on owning a signature series anything. I could really care less about who has played one before me. I'd much prefer to save my money and maybe even mod a cheaper bass to be what I wanted it to be. With that said, I do own a Mike Dirnt P bass that I like really well. I bought it because it was cheap and I liked the look though. But I hate the star on it. Nothing that the Sharpie didn't fix.

OK, y'all school me on this.

@ Roscoe haha i know what you mean about the star. im a pretty big fan of Matt Freeman so i would buy that bass. ive actually been lusting over it for a while...aside from that is the color scheme of it. @Jromero i havent tried it yet but have heard good things about it from all of the reviews out there.

I like the Vintage Modified better.
The VM has the Duncan design
pickup that just sounds better to
me.

Just my opinion.

You should try one.

Thanks for the input. I'll probably go to GC later today and try out some p-basses. I'll probably do what roscoestring said and save my money and mod one to my likings. We'll see what happens.

OK here's from an "Old School Guy" with a very good friend whose a Fender Rep. :)

FWIW the signature or endorsement of that bass has nothing to do with it pricing or it's quality. It's a marketing idea to bring punk players over to that bass.

There's a huge quality difference between an Squier Affinity or Squier Standard and their CV series basses. The Matt Freeman model is essentially a CV PBass spec'd more to a 70's look and feel than a 60's. It gives players the choice of a straightforward black or vintage white color with a maple board that the CV 60's PBass doesn't offer. The level of quality and pricing is that of a CV series Bass.

The Squire VM's are a level below the CV's and IME compare with Fenders MIM Standards in quality whereas the CV line compares more favorably with their MIA Standards for hundreds of dollars less. I own a CV Jazz and I can attest to that.

If you're gonna signficantly modify a bass then maybe an Affinity or Squier Standard body is where you start. At the quality level of the CV's there is little or modification needed. If someone want a 70s style PBass with a maple board they'd find that Matt Freeman model a great buy.

Five minutes with a razor blade and it's no longer even a Matt Freeman signature model. It's just a really nice PBass in black or vintage white with a maple board. :D

It finally came in today. Coincidentally, it came in on my b-day. I played it for about 30mins and immediately loved it. Great tone an very little setup was required.
