Writing a song for my wife, based on George Harrison's version of "if not for you". This is what I have so far.

If not for you babe, I'd be living on the south side.
I be divorced 3 or 4 times, if not for you.

If not for you babe, I'd be chasing bar tramps all the time.
It would be such a magical time, if not for you.

ha ha. Nope. I was an engineering major. Lots of bad math equations, but no bad poetry.

Don't you wanna rephrase that last line a bit? Think about it..... and with my understanding of what you have written so far, you are also demeaning yourself.

aw come on, try to be romantic not rheumatic! Go through some examples ...from I would walk one thousand miles to... there's no sunshine when she's gone, but shave the "extra cheese" and keep the feelings true..
Here lemme try to help.. what I say to my lady... when we met we were two really slim cats.. now she's still like a model, and I am like a locomotive. So I tell her- my dear better half- quite literally without you I would have been a lesser man ( fitting in my old high school jeans that is) ; if you just did not cook as good as you do... So let's go with..

Tragicomical as that might be

To fill the void next to me,

ps: highly romantic songs in the vein of " if you give your love away, I'm forced to do the same" are really not a great idea. What I said earlier was.. a gross pastiche, and I hope you see the humor in that. Really a love song that is not quite romantic or says things along the lines of.. if it ain't you then it's another chick down the street, she fits the bill just fine, fine, fine, so fine me! don't really work and can sometimes hurt even. Thread carefully young hero... some things are better left unsaid... some things make you feel dead, inside, now..
