My parents just got me Rocksmith on the Xbox for Xmas.

Anybody have opinions in this or played it yet? Hoping it will be a food way to get the kids some basics and help me refine a lot of areas.

My son has it...he likes it and I've played it a couple of times. It's a fun, but I don't really see how anyone would learn to play guitar with it...

I got one a couple weeks ago for my ps3, but haven't taken the time to open it up. I am in one of the discouraged moods about my inability to move forward playing the guitar.

so far i notice i improved a little... i never played guitar, got bit by the Fender Stratocaster bug and bought my 1st Fat Strat Sunburst MiM on eBAY, and fell in love with modding strats, i currently have 4 working Strats 2 MiMs Partscaster, a 96' Squier Standard Dakota Red MiK, a 84' Squier Bullet Series 1 Blackie MiJ.

with Rocksmith i am learning something dont know if it is as effective as learning with actual lessons but it is fun

The only thing that keeps me from getting is is the fact that it uses tab. I've never used tab before. I can read music (including bass cleft) as easily as written word and can jot down melodies on a normal music staff as easily as the lyrics.

I think it's a little late for me to try learning completely different way. I also don't see how it could be as accurate as far as tempo goes. I don't understand how things like dotted quarter note, or triplets would be notated accurately.

Tab would be like trying to learn a foreign language for me.

Just tried it for the first time tonight.
It is...weird.

You have to crank the volume on your guitar just to tune it in the console. Took me an hour to figure that part out.

On top fo that, my pinky really hurts now. You have to move so fast (can't slow down tempo of a song) that you're guessing half the time at the notes. Sometimes it's great as you can learn a few quick riffs, but with the color coded strings, it makes it difficult to know where you're supposed to be.

At least reading tab you can see the patterns with numbers and just KNOW where your fingers should go. In the game, you get confused as the strings and frets do not line up the same as tab. It's like looking in a mirror...the top string is the low E. In tab, the top string is the high E. This is backwards...but you can switch it up...still doesnt' work as well as normal tab, though.

I admit that I was able to play about 5 songs tonight with no practice...which is an accomplishment, but I don't think I LEARNED anything. Just was racing to keep pace with teh game. Also, just when you think you have the song learned, they up the difficulty and start throwing new stuff at you in the middle of the song...this disorients you quite quicklyk and you lose where yhou are at.

I have no clue how they are going to do things like arpeggio's on this game. At least in tab you can see them in advance adn prepare for them and KNOW what you're supposed to do. In this game, I see arpeggio's being somewhat of total guesswork.

Probably keep the game to give it a 'fair' chance, but I don't know if it will help my son at all. He's 8, and he tried it tonight for the first time and couldn't even find the notes. It was very discouraging to him.

Just FYI.

Arise Thread...come back to life!!! IT IS ALIVE!!!

I think that guitar PLAYERS are too hard on this "game". This is a learning tool. I don't believe that it was geared more towards beginners than established players/musicians. I got it at the beginning of the year and I really like it. I am completely new to playing guitar and I am just as into it now as I was when it was new. Hard to say for a Married, Father of 2 young children.

At the beginning, Yes it is easy, I can admit that now after 4 months, but to a complete noob, this game was challenging. Now it is a tremendous help. It makes practice fun, has many mini games that teach skills and the muscle memory in a rewarding way. Lots of songs and variety in their styles.

Granted, you don't LEARN the songs from the get go, but once you "master" them in the game, you have the option to go into "Master Mode" at this point all you get it the backing tracks and what ever noise your guitar makes. That is where you really get to play music.

If you need something that can motivate you to practice and give you some instant gratification, this game can help. I can pretty much guarantee that if I was sitting on my bed trying to go through TAB, I wouldn't have 2 hour practice sessions 2-3 times a week...6 hours of practice a week isn't easy to come up with, but when you want to....it is a heck of a lot easier to find.

Have an open mind and give it a chance.
