Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and thought I would post up the first Squier I've purchased recently. I've always played metal but recently have started to get into playing more mellow music so wanted something that would suit that better then what I was already using. As far as I can tell this is a 1996 Squier Affinity (someone can correct me if I'm wrong). 22 frets not 21 like some other models. I purchased it online and to be honest I am really surprised at how good it sounds and how well it plays. My only real complaint would be that the tuners don't feel that great so will probably update those at a later date. Another thing that surprised me was how heavy the guitar feels, I tried another Squier recently in store and it was very light compared to what I have here, this is almost as heavy as my home built mahogany Explorer. It didn't come with a tremolo arm so will have to figure out the size I need.

Anyway here's a few pics, if anyone has any further info on these I'm all ears.

Thanks for the welcomes! Modding this would certainly be something I will be looking at doing in the future so good to hear this is a good platform for that. It's certainly a very solid guitar which is great.

Welcome, and congrats on your new guitar!

Hi all,
this is almost as heavy as my home built mahogany Explorer.
Now, that side remark is most certainly something I (and probably quite a few others) would be interested in reading more about ;)

Welcome to Squier-Talk, Brendan and HNGD! I notice the low E tuner is positioned rather low in the headstock. This will limit the number of options available and is something you wanna keep in mind, when you decide to upgrade those tuners. Other than that, plenty of modding posibilities!

Sounds more interesting then it is, "home built" should really have read "finished and assembled at home". I found an Ibanez S Series neck for sale online from a Luthier here in New Zealand, he also had some Explorer body blanks for sale so after having talks with him I asked that he do all the routing and I'd do the rest. I'll post some pics up shortly.

Here's a few pics of the explorer, I'm at work at the moment so can't get any better pictures. Gotoh Tuners & Gotoh Hardtail Bridge, Ibanez S470 neck, Mahogany Body, EMG JH Pickups. My plan is to strip it all down again shortly and repaint it white and have my 3 year old daughter paint whatever she likes all over the body and then clear coat it, it will then stay like that forever :)

congrats on the Squier!

They are solid guitars and nice modding platforms if you're into that sort of thing.

I'm curious that your Affinity has the smaller headstock. I was under the impression that Affinity Strats had the large headstock...but I guess that has changed over the years.

Thanks, yea I wondered about that to. Also the fact that it has 22 frets instead of 21, must have been something the early models had...
