So I tried what you said this morning. I also added some gain with the amp. I really like the DM and ds-1 together. But when the Rat is added, it’s just too much for my taste. I can’t get that to sound good.

The first half of the video is with the Rat, the second half is just the DM and ds-1.

I actually really liked the rat - I just love it’s fizzy character! The second half definitely sounded great as well.

Your on the right track ! Keep messing around w the different variables of the rat til you get what you like. I envisioned stepping on it in combination with one or both - making a big gain lead sound or an all out speaker ripping/tearing/exploding.

I’ve heard from a few people doing well w the rat for low gain. Might try the same tricks but change up the order :
Rat >tc>ds1

It’s all trial and error and there are no set rules !

Most of anything I have to suggest is super high gain for Doom, Black, Post metals.

I use a TS as a boost first. No gain, volume at max tone 12. Then I stack dirt of choice. If playing Doom I'll go Fuzz, for Black or Post I'll go Distortion.

FUZZ
Russian Muff green (Mine is an Abominable Hail Cannabis)
Black Russian-( Mine is a Lamp Electronics Custom made)
Boss Hyperfuzz-(I'm using an Abominable Demon Lung)

DISTORTION
Boss Metal Zone.

The trick is really to use the TS as a boost. Also, if you have a Modeller, you can omit most dirt and use AMP gain. Boost volume with TS and crank amp gain and get some amazing Distortion tones.

Thanks for the tips. I haven’t had much opportunity to continue with this experiment. I have a bunch of other dirt pedals that I need to get in the mix and try stacking. Maybe this afternoon I’ll get back on it! :)

DISTORTION
Boss Metal Zone

I have one of those. I use that in the fx loop of a clean amp or as an amp modeler going straight into a mixer or DAW. It sounds amazing in either one of those scenarios.

It seems so muted to me when I do that. I tried it and lost a lot of volume. I read that is how to do get the most from the pedal, but I must be doing it wrong.
